WWDC Wrapup

For those of you who don’t know, this past week was Apple’s WorldWide Developer’s Conference (WWDC), where they release and preview a whole bunch of their newest tech. The big topic of this year’s WWDC was the Macbook line. Apple has the Macbook Air, which did not see too many upgrades except the new Intel Ivy Bridge processor, and the 13″ model now can come with a 512GB SSD and 8GB of RAM. However, the Macbook Pro saw some very interesting changes. The 13″ and 15″ models stayed relatively the same, again with processor and graphics boosts, however Apple did away with their 17″ monster notebook, and released the 15″ Macbook Pro with Retina Display.

Retina Display is a display that Apple has developed and has installed in their iPod Touch 4th gen, iPhone 4 and 4S, and also the new iPad (iPad 3). Many are probably wondering, what is so great about the Retina Display. Well first off, it has over twice the pixel depth as a normal display, or in other words it has a higher resolution. Apple is ingenious in their design, but the largest screen they had up until this point was 2048×1536 (iPad 3).

Apple however shocked everybody at WWDC this year with the next-gen Macbook Pro. The screen weighs in at an astonishing 2880X1800, over 2.5x the depth of any 1080p television. Apple also streamlined this MBP model down to .71″; the same thickness as the thickest part of a Macbook Air. Another shocker in this model is the lack of a SuperDrive, Gigabit Ethernet, and also the FireWire 800 port, three commonly used peripherals in the MBP. Apple did however, add a second Thunderbolt port (10Gbps up and down transfer), 2 USB 3.0, and an HDMI port. The hard drive in it is also all SSD, meaning faster boot and read/write times for all of the design gurus out there like my friend Jeff, with the addition of up to 768GB of SSD storage – something unheard of in a 15″ laptop. Also, Apple has given this Pro the ability to use 16GB of RAM, but neither of these are user replaceable. Good news is, it only starts at $2199, which is way more than I can afford for any laptop… even though I love Apple.

Another thing that Apple unveiled is the concept for iOS 6. With a new Maps App capable of turn-by-turn directions, and a sleep mode so people do not bother you when you do not wish to be bothered, and so many more minute features that seem to make it better. If you are an iOS developer, you can test it out now, if not, you’ll have to wait with the rest of us.

The Airport Express also got a slight upgrade this year, going from more of a Magsafe power adapter design to looking more like a white Apple TV. I haven’t looked into it much, but it does look really cool. Well, if you want any more information, you can get it straight from the horse’s mouth or you can go to The Verge or Engadget and read more, either way, Apple is a very innovative company that is willing to push the bounds of what people view as the technological norm.
